Buyer's Questionnaire Think a golden is right for you? Consider the following. Goldens are a large dog. Males are 23-24 inches and weigh 65 to 75 pounds. Females are 21 1/2 to 22 1/2 inches and weigh 55 to 65 pounds. Are you prepered for this size of dog? Are you willing to have a golden in your house? Goldens are very sociable and need to be with there humans when they are home. They are not suited to back yard living. Goldens have tails that wag constantly, and any table that is tail level is in grave danger of being swept clean in one wag. Are you prepared to tail proof your house? Are you prepared for lots of hair? Yes, goldens shed A LOT. If you are a picky house keeper then a golden may not be the breed for you. Are you prepared to go for walks? Goldens are a sporting breed bred to work in the field, and therefore need daily off leash exercise. A walk around the block on leash just won't cut it. Goldens need to be groomed at least once a week, and more frequently during the heavy shedding periods. Can you fit this into your schedule? Goldens being retrievers have a need to carry things around, especially when company comes to the door. If they don't have a suitable toy handy (preferably a plush one) a shoe, or perhaps a sock will have to do. Can you handle slobbery toys scattered about? And the occasional soggy shoe? Looking for a guard dog? NOT!!! A golden is more likely to help a burglar than hinder them. They will even carry things for them if they throw a ball or two. Golden puppies, and all breeds for that matter do not come pre trained. It is up to you, the new owner to see that your new puppy gets the proper start in life. Training starts THE DAY you get your new puppy not only when they are old enough to take formal obedience classes. This will consume a CONSIDERABLE amount of your time in the first few weeks your puppy comes home. Are you prepared to give this time to your new puppy? If you are comfortable with ALL these factors then a golden is for you.
